Orange Sherbet has been featured in Parenting Magazine, San Francisco Magazine, The Chronicle, Daily Candy, SF Weekly, Zooglobble, and more. They are award-winning songwriters and have four cds of original and traditional material. Jill & Tamsen have been performing tasty tunes for families all over the Bay Area for the past 10 years, from The Noe Valley Ministry in San Francisco to Ashkenaz & The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. They have backgrounds in education and child development, as well as a love for delicious foods.
Tamsen Fynn grew up in a British family that was spread all over the world, and at family reunions they always sang & played guitars all night long. Playing music was just the thing her whole family loved doing. When she was in grade school her aunt & uncle had an electric player piano, which was extremely addictive, and it led her to track one down in adulthood. The current piano is human-powered by foot pedals, and is a serious aerobic workout!
Jill Pierce grew up in Connecticut in a family of musicians as well. In high school she played in a band with Steve, her husband, who also plays in Orange Sherbet. It took until college before they confessed their love to each other, but then things went pretty quickly, and soon they were married with children, teaching Mary Ann Hall’s Music for Children, and playing Orange Sherbet gigs all over the Bay Area.
Orange Sherbet Jill & Tamsen both studied musical theater, classical singing, jazz, folk, rock, and many things in-between. When they sang their first song together, at a community music jam, it was instant chemistry & they were ready to collaborate on a musical project. Orange Sherbet was born! The name came from a band Steve had always wanted to form in college. It summed up the feel of their kid’s band: tasty, jazzed-up, and cool. They bring a lot of humor and skill to their music. Ultimately, they want to deepen the experience of music, not just be entertainment. If people sing all the way home and wake up singing the next morning, then they've had a good show. Jill and Tamsen improvise & scat jazzy-style and get spontaneous at their kid’s shows. They’ll even write a song on the spot if the kids throw out ideas! They are so synched up when they're singing that they will often both switch to the same harmony at the exact same time. They call it a mind melt. It’s as if they have the same brain. Speaking of brains, they also understand and value the complexity of music, the way it affects brain development, and the amazing healing properties of sound. They are settled in the Bay Area and would love to keep performing locally while sharing their recorded music with more & more families. They also have a secret fantasy of Car Talk playing “Things That Go” from their cd Big Brother, Big Sister, being in every public library in the country, and having their music on radio, film, and quality t.v.
